    SUMMARY

    Plans, directs, monitors and evaluates the daily operation of all library functions and staff. Provides direction and operational management of the library, to include planning and organizing workflow, initiating and implementing operating policies and procedures, personnel, overseeing of library public information activities, evaluation of services, and record maintenance. 

    This position description indicates in general the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required or assigned to this position.

    JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Builds library collections by selecting, recommending, ordering, receiving and shelving reference and circulation resources. Assures that collection includes adequate resources appropriate to the instructional programs of NTU.
    • Organizes collection by classifying, cataloguing, marking, and displaying resources; developing location guides; maintaining research and locator systems; re-shelving and refurbishing resources as needed.
    • Assists library patrons by clearly describing the library's resources, methods and systems; training patrons in library research methods; and guiding them in using these to meet their learning needs.
    • Locates and secures outside resources by clarifying requests, identifying and researching sources, securing inter-library loans, and training patrons in the use of these facilities and systems.
    • Issues and tracks resources using a documented check out and accountability system.
    • Responsible for development of and adherence to Collection Development policy and guidelines.
    • Monitors and ensures library computer systems operability.
    • Develops and implements systems to maintain records on employees, inventories, compliance activities, Library Division performance measures, required and benchmarked statistics, including collection usage statistics. 
    • Provides library instruction to students, faculty and staff.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel regarding departmental activities.
    • Supervises personnel which include hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
    • Oversees the daily operations of the library.
    • Preparing and maintaining compliance, work schedules, time keeping, and approval.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

    • Master's Degree in library science or library and information science.
    • New Mexico State Library Certification I.
    • Five year's work experience in a public, private, school, special, or research library.
    • Two year in a supervisory capacity.
    • Doctoral degree in Library Science preferred.
    • Higher education experience preferred.
    • Valid and clean state driver's license.
    • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat.

    SUMMARY

    The Reference Librarian shall report to the Director of Library Services. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Assist students, faculty, staff, and community patrons with information resources and research.
    •  Maintain library technology; update library webpages; troubleshoot and update patron and staff computers; resolve subscription database issues; assist computer services staff with library network as needed.

    How does it get done?

     Assists in the ordering and invoicing of Library materials (books and media) and supplies from library vendors.

     Prepares reports for Federal, State, County and local (Friends of the Library) on Bond, MOU, and other grant expenditures.

     Compiles financial reports for required annual State Library reports, and other library entity reports.

     Unpacks shipments of library orders.

    Physical Requirements

     Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain.

     Assignment to the Library Division requires unpacking shipments of library orders which involves lifting and moving of boxes up to 40 lbs.

     Periodic walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and reaching are required in the normal course of essential job duty performance.

     Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required for most essential functions.

     Speaking, hearing, and seeing are essential to the effective performance of position tasks.

     Mental application includes memory utilization, emotional stability, and discriminative thinking.

    Working Environment

     Work is primarily performed in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls and exposure to VDT’s and CRT’s.

    The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) is seeking a collaborative, flexible individual for our Education and Research Librarian position, who is excited to take on new opportunities supporting students and faculty in a variety of allied health programs. The Education and Research Librarian continues and expands HSLIC’s library services and collaborative instructional programs to UNM’s Health Sciences Center allied health professions, College of Nursing programs and other assigned health sciences programs in a fast-paced, continually changing environment. 

    The faculty librarian embeds information skills into competency-based health sciences curricula through innovative instructional design, attends curricular meetings for assigned HSC programs, and collaborates with instructors both internal and external to the library. They will provide both curriculum-integrated and freestanding instruction (synchronous and asynchronous) for a diverse health professions student population. 

    The Education and Research Librarian also provides research support through expert searching, consultation services and instruction for health sciences researchers. The faculty librarian collaborates with colleagues to develop and present workshops and trainings on topics relevant to the HSC community, such as database searching, knowledge management, scholarly communication and publishing. This position will be a vital part of a highly collaborative library team that seeks to learn together and support each other. A successful candidate will be curious and willing to grow and develop as a professional, while helping others to grow and learn as part of the campus community.

    This position reports to the Division Head for Research, Education and Clinical Information Services (RECIS) and works with members of the RECIS team and other library departments as part of an academic health sciences library to meet the information needs of the students, staff, and faculty of the UNM Health Sciences Center, and the broader UNM community. 

    This is a full-time, benefits eligible faculty position with a primary appointment in HSLIC.
