Why does the job exist?
Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
This position provides outreach services as needed to New Mexico's Navajo Chapters, as well as program support for Tribal Libraries Program grants, Rural Libraries Program grants, and the General Obligation grants to public and tribal libraries.
How does it get done?
The Tribal Outreach and Program Support Specialist is responsible for the Navajo Nation Library Outreach, which consists of assisting the Tribal Library Program (TLP) Coordinator with the development of community libraries on the Navajo Nation as requested by chapter house leaders; and representing the New Mexico State Library (NMSL) TLP at community and tribal functions. Additionally, the position is in charge of Tribal Library Program Grant Management and Library Development. The position provides support for the: Libraries Grant Program; State Grants in Aid Program; Rural Library Endowment Program; and General Obligation Bond Program.

This job serves New Mexico's Navajo Nation chapters, senior centers, schools, tribal libraries, and public libraries.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has library experience and college degree in business or accounting preferred. Must be proficient in MSOffice suite of software, including Word and Excel with the ability to use merge functions to create large batches of documents and spreadsheets to track various programs for tribal and public libraries. Fluent speaker of Diné Bizaad preferred.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one and one half (1.5) years of relevant experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Job entails both office work with exposure to a video display terminal and extensive personal computer and telephone usage and extended sitting, and driving a state car on library and chapter house visits for site and community outreach. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
